I was initially most drawn to Rei, though all the characters were related. I found Asuka offputting. I developed a much greater appreciation for Asuka and Misato later, and now generally can appreciate all of the characters on some level.
Interesting how that happens. Evangelion as a whole was more or less engineered to invisibly and fluidly spur / force a gradual regression to childhood, draw out fears and insecurities, and bring what made and makes you into a conscious frame, simply to follow the story and characters. Masterpiece.
The scene(s) the end of End of Evangelion, with Shinji on the playground with the pyramid sand castle. The feeling. The lighting, the vibe. And the underwater scene near the end, it had a light brightness, and peace, I have no felt for a very long time. If ever. Brought me back.
