Nah not CAD, especially for a distorted map like transit generally is. As another anon said, Illustrator is a likely one to use as these maps are more graphics then geography. IF one was making a geolocated and accurate map (i.e. each station and line is at their real coordinates), then GIS (ArcMap/ArcPro specifically) can be used. I've done such an exercise many times when we need to show our study area with the nearby transit. Shapefiles and KML data already exist from most agency sources (i.e. NYC Open Data portal), so we download it and plop it in our map then stylize. Again though something like a transit map which is necessarily exaggerated or distorted, sure you could do it in GIS but probably better to use a graphics oriented program. These kinds of maps are more to do with wayfinding which is completely different than say a geographically accurate city map.

Does anyone else love how TPE uses (or used) a three-unit Class 185 on their Manchester-Edinburgh service? Especially at the height of tourist season just before christmas. Imagine not having a seat for the whole journey. Good that they've got the 397s on that route now.

You want an example of the opposite then? Have a look at Victoria, Australia. In the 2000s the state govt improved the regional rail there so it was properly competitive with driving. And as a direct consequence, patronage numbers doubled.

I haven't used QGIS much because ESRI has a stranglehold on the government and education sector. One of my professors always said that "ESRI is a four-letter word". As in it's a curse word with how often things break and go wrong.

A thousand times better. Fuck me ArcMap is such a slow piece of shit and the interface is garbage. I don't know how they have the gall to charge 10,000$ per seat. QGIS is based af, almost never crashes, has tons of useful plugins (also made some myself). Only thing missing is DWG compatibility so I use AutoCAD for that but fuck me it feels like going back to the stone age. Also fuck ESRI and fuck shapefiles.

I have always been interested in contributing to my city and the nearby ones on Open Street Maps but never got ahead with it. I don't leave in one of the "main countries" and surprisingly there is quite a lot of stuff that has been already mapped here. Does anyone have any experience with contributing?

pic related is an interesting app that uses data from OSM and is free and open source. You can download the maps/regions you want and use them offline, it is pretty nice, I've been using it for a while

I live in an area where a lot had already been mapped.
Contributed via a Java-based frontend quite a while back. I think they have a JS-browser-frontend these days for that, but I haven't used it, yet.
Mostly did dirt-work, but also added some nifty stuff non-locals wouldn't know about, and that you'd never see on a regular map.
Never ran into any trouble, and my edits are largely still in place - except for changes in reality.
Compared to Wikipedia, the OSM working environment is really excellent. It can't be stated often enough, though: RTFM. Do it before making an edit.

JOSM is still the golden standard.

You don't necessarily need to. Even for small edits they can quickly pile up to overwhelm your experience on iD. It's only good on RapiD, adding MapwithAI roads and some available building data (more direct than the JOSM plugin). For the simplest edit (usually about tags), Level0 is sufficient.

Similar to >>1617437, I haven't used QGIS much as my company licenses ESRI products. On occasion I've used QGIS for it's speedy load times and stability to view large shapefiles. Otherwise it's usually ArcMap. One admittedly good thing about ESRI, despite their pitfalls, is the ecosystem we license is pretty useful. We get ArcGIS Online and Portal, letting us publish and host online, client facing maps and host basemaps for our survey apps. ESRI is annoying in their license structure for sure though, ArcMap has three levels where they basically tore out features and locked them behind various license levels.

Is it? The one on F-Droid is called OSMAnd~, not OSMAnd+.

Things like contour lines, hillshade maps, nautical depth, offline wikipedia point of interest information are also included per my understanding, which would require monthly subscription even on regular paid version from Google Play
