And part of a free society is the ability to choose who you associate with based on their speech. A man is free to scream NIGGERFAGGOT as loudly as he wants, and everyone around him is just as free to walk away from him. The screaming man is not entitled to everyone else's time, nor is he entitled to their business. To deny others the right to walk away would be to deny them free speech as well.
In essence the only way to have a society "free from retaliation" we would all need to be detached, emotionless robots who never make decisions based on the speech of others and only operate as abstract economic actors. That's simply impossible without stripping away our humanity, which would ironically remove our ability to make controversial statements to begin with.
