I'm guessing the veggies aren't so much for calories as vitamins, fibre, etc. Cabbage and broccoli are fine additions in that regard. Tomatoes are not a bad idea, even if they are a lot of water. They grow and reproduce easy. Apples store well, and can be dried/juiced, etc.
I would add peanuts to the list, but you need the right climate for them.
Potatoes becoming widespread really did spark a human survival revolution though. Famines became less common and less deadly since planting them took off in the 1700s. Irish potato famine? The problem with literally relying on a single crop on a large scale, and also British not giving a fuck.
