how hard of a hike is it right now with the water so low? A guy was telling me you need to get a little wet and previous bad experience with mud has been keeping me from hitting it

first and last time I went the water was high and idk what to expect for hike, i went in shorts and the bushes shredded my legs and I had my usual amount of gear for the other lake I hit that has extremely easy trails so I was over in gear which made the hike up and down on the hillside even worse.

The trail down is fine, if you go left you have to go through the creek which is really low atm, like 1-2" in a couple spots, and then the mud, but if you can tell the difference between mucky mud and sandy mud it isn't an issue. The right side is super steep, but less ppl go that way and it wasn't that bad. I wore shorts and I was fine.

I predominantly frog fish because the takes are theatrical and since they're going to get winched in on overly heavy braid and max drag anyways it doesn't matter that you caught 3 pounds of bass and 5 pounds of weeds

The biggest bass of my life I caught while harassing bluegills with a UL rod and a #3 UL Rippin Rap. It barely pulled drag on the strike, dove to the weeds at the bottom, and played dead until I released it. 6.5 lbs and I've caught funner shoes.

Ya, the pier is like 50 yards from the water. The mud was a non issue though, I was there a few months back where it was a pita, but today I think it has had time to settle my feet didn't sink more than an inch or so.

I use a modified albright's knot. Works real well, can tie it super fast. I have about one covering of spool of 12 lb mono, 10 lb braid, and an 8 ft 12 lb mono leader. Helped me land 2 crappie today in a pond that saw 2+ inches of rain. I was hoping for trout but I just can't get them there. Gonna have to practice my fly rod and go to the trout streams later.

I predominantly fish for largemouth here in Vegas in a river and they fight substantially harder than regular pond/lake largemouth. Idk why the hate. Largemouth are just nice because they're abundant everywhere. I caught a 2.3 pounder a few days ago that fought really well for ~3 minutes and I was just pitching to an eddy ~15 feet in front of me with a medium-heavy rod and 14 pound line.

Yeah we use heavy line, my medium spinning rods have 12 pound fluoro, medium heavy 14, heavy 16, all Sniper FC, but it's needed because these fuckers dive into really disgusting cover, holes in rocks where the line will rub against the rock faces, etc.

Smallmouth tho are amazing, especially on the fly, holy hell that's ADDICTING.

What's a good starter rod? All the guides in the pastebin are for knots & freshwater lures. I own literally no fishing equipment, so any basic tips would be helpful. I'll be fishing piers in Florida in about a month & I'd like to prepare beforehand. Hoping to catch some Snapper, but also baraccuda. Would I need two or three rods? I'm assuming I need one rod just for catching bait right?

If you wanna catch barracuda snook sharks etc you should probably just get a penn battle 4000 or 5000. they're also sealed so you don't need to learn how to rebuild them if you're fishing in salt. That size would be fine for catching snapper and yellowtail and stuff too, if not slightly overkill.

Similar for me, I was using a 1 inch rapala original and a bass I could put my first in its mouth grabbed it. He ran straight for the lilly pads, barely pulled drag, and I wound up just wading over to it and grabbing it to land it. The fish wouldn't have broken my line, I would have on 12 pounds of lilly pads.

I just tie palomars in freshwater for anything that straight to a hook and for cast and retrieve lures I tie San Diego Jam knots, which is the main knot I use in saltwater. Double Uni and alberto/royal polaris knot for line connections depending on what I'm doing.

I use a palomar for small stuff and use the tag to tie a handful of overhand knots over the first inch or so of leader for a little extra protection against chewing. Double San Diego jam know for west coast irons, AG chain for stickbaits and poppers, kreh loop for crankbaits and jerkbaits, spider hitch on dropper loops, fg knot for braid to mono/fluoro, and triple surgeon for mono to fluoro. Only time I use a uni is to tie my rockfish gangion to the swivel.

You're welcome, here's my go-to fly. I've caught more carp on it than all my other patterns combined. It's also great for smallies. It's called the backwards bug, and its basically a modified foxy clouser. The original was tied with black thread and the brown hair on the back of a white bucktail, but dyed arctic fox moves better and orange thread helps me keep track of the fly so I'm more likely to see an eat
