I use an Alps Commander pack and just strap my bag to it. It's actually really nice since some of my gear (sleeping bag, tent, sleeping pad, pot inside bag, a drybag with clothes) can be fixed outside my actual bag safely (with rain covers etc). It lets you pack out your stuff without too bad of a weight penalty, then drop your stuff, disengage your actual bag, and use it for short hikes. Lots of people say it's great for packing out tree climbing sticks, stands, game meat and whatnot as well. That all being said though, my needs would be just as easily met by something like a Teton Scout, it's all up to the person.
