Although really, Californication is just shorthand for overpopulation. People talk a lot about the politics stuff, but the shift left is inevitable as urban population grows. More people = more rules needed to keep order, more cultural conflict as urban dwellers begin to outvote the rural and small town residents. And the housing prices are just wealthier people moving in and driving them up.
Really, if we don't want every state to eventually become California, we need to stem immigration and keep the birthrate low. But then everyone will complain about muh GDP and muh pensions and muh social security, because capitalism, and entitlements, rely on endless growth. The only ultimate solution is the devaluation of labor with machines and AI, but then you have a whole host of new problems you have to deal with.
Shit's fucked brehs. Enjoy your natural places while they remain uncrowded. Eventually you'll need a permit to enter every wilderness area.
