Pic related to how little that article knows what it's talking about. This is *not* soft light, but that article claims it is. This is in fact quite harsh light. Moving the umbrella back several feet would improve the light in this photo. >OP mentioned they had a stick light, which isn't diffused nor is it a large source of light, hence the very harsh shadows on his pics.
Yes, but closer lights are still harsher than distant lights, which is where you and the Wiki article are deeply incorrect.
