Body upgrade advice

I'm looking to upgrade my Nikon D3200 and I'm torn between going full sensor or cropped. I normally take wildlife pics. Shall I get the D610 or a D7200?

Those are very much sidegrades. I'd save up for a D500 or at the very least a D7500.

But really, the future is probably mirrorless, so I wouldn't be investing too much into F mount anyways.

I'll check again, but the 7200 looked like it was roughly on part with the 7500. The main issue with my 3200 is I bought a 500mm lens for cheap, and realised it doesn't have an AF motor, so trying to manually focus on birds mid-flight is painful.
DXO also rate the D610 significantly higher than the D500. Maybe I'm missing something though.

Well then I'd grab the D7200
The D500 is still an APS-C sensor (DXO mark kinda sucks by the way) while the D610 is FF.

The D610 is a good camera, but you're losing out on reach vs an APS-C sensor & the general nice to haves of the D500 arn't there either, lower burst rate, worse autofocus.

Oh and also, idk how much of a spook this is, but DXO claims I get 10 P-MP with the D610 but only 6 P-MP with the D7200. I guess I can sell my 170-500mm lens, but I can't afford to upgrade it for a while.

The D500 is the best crop you can get!
the D7500 is waste of money if you comparing to the D7200!

I don't have much money rn, I'd say around £500 max, but I can go a little higher if I find a great deal. the D610 seems to be better than D750 (going off of DXO sensor ratings), not by much though.Something like a D610 can get that low, and the D7200 is a little cheaper.

I mainly shoot wildlife, which is why I NEED a body with a built in AF motor. Too many great shots have been ruined by me being inept with MF.

Then I wouldn't look for FF bodies in general

D500 on Amazon UK costs £1,445 - 3 times over your budget
I don't really know other bodies from the APS-C format :(
Maybe you can get it used for cheaper
I tried only the D500 from the potential candidates for you and can say:
awesome focus (same as D5)
fairly high rate (10 fps)
>I am mostly landscape/cityspace, so not really bothered me, but for a wildlife shooter might be handy
Tilt screen helps a lot, also the back LCD is real good

Thanks for the advice, I'd "never" use a tilt screen desu, my 500mm lens weighs quite a bit, so I gotta keep the body right next to me, while I'm bracing my arms.
As I said, the D7200 is within budget, and I can keep my kit lenses. Most the time I don't "need" the extra range from a crop body, although it can be nice, but I get serious issues with noise from lower light. Granted I only started a few weeks ago, so I'm very new to all of this, and the weather is almost always rain or overcast.

If its not clear, I always use the viewfinder, I'm really not a fan of live view.

Thanks so much. I think I'll go with that then, over the D610. More light would be nice, especially since its dark so often rn, but the D7200 has some nice features I want, and I'm sure I'll kick myself if I can't get a close up of a more distant bird.

i upgraded from the D3200 to the D700 about 2 years ago and it was the best gear related decision of my photographic career so far. you can get one for practically pennies on ebay too. if you don't have a need for more megapixels, it does practically everything you'd need a camera to do.

Aren't Sigma lenses good? Obviously not on par with Nikkor but still. Its the Sigma 170-500mm APO. I have the 80-200mm kit lens which is good, but obviously not nearly as good when I need range.

That's a meme, what FF really is about is getting wider FoV.
The better light performance is a side effect of using lenses that open up more.
The D610 has a crop mode that effectively makes it a DX but you get 10MP or so.

Oh ok, thank you. I know the D610 can crop, and going by DXO P-MP, it still has a slightly higher level of detail than the 7200, when using my lens. I've been told that that doesn't mean much though.

Honestly I'd get the 7200 if I were you. You'll likely use mostly DX lenses for your type of photography so FX is a waste.
Now, if you were interested on some wide shots then I'd say FX is worth it.

Ok, thank you. I was only really considering the D610 because I use a full sensor lens and its DXO sensor rating is significantly higher. The D7200 is more in line with my budget though, unless I sell some crypto.

No problem. Those sensor graphs are a bit overrated I think. Also the D7200 has better AF and an important thing is that the image on the viewfinder will be better when using DX lenses. The D610 has a viewfinder made for FX lenses so I believe it won't fill the viewfinder, you'll get some vignetting.

The benefit of shooting in FX mode would be getting a wider FoV, utilizing the parts that you're not using now. Useful for some nearer shots where you can get more resolution by using the lens in a longer length to capture the same thing.

Its really old, but I got it for way under its actual price.
Its the Sigma 170-500MM F5-6.3 APO, made from 96-05.
Here is a pic I took earlier today, Still messing with MF and trying to calibrate my viewfinder better, since I can get a clear image through it, but out of focus in the picture. So forgive me for the bird being a little out of focus.

I think I'll go with the D610 in the end, just for the dynamic range more than anything. Where I am rn, I don't really need reach, but I am getting issues with dynamic range. Even if I need to crop, I'll still get 16MP which should be good enough, especially after editing and compressing an image. Faster AF would be nice, but anything has to be faster than MF, or my d3200 kit lenses. WiFi and other stuff sounds nice, but I think its more of a gimmick than anything else.
I'm gonna wait a bit longer before I decide though, thank you for all the points you've all put forward, even if it sounds like I'm going against most of them.

I'm sure it is, I know they're both great cameras. I can only afford to get one, and I'm gonna have to keep it for quite some time, so I'm just nervous about making the "wrong" choice.
Maybe I'll end up flipping a coin over it or something, since both seem like great choices, just for slightly different reasons.

What I'm hearing is that I should get the D610 for full frame, then when I get a job, I can afford to get a D500. Maybe having 2 cameras is stupid, but I'm half planning on keeping my D3200 if I need extra reach, and upgrading it down the road.

I know the 7200 is probably the better choice, but theres just something about the 610 that keeps pulling me back.

The d3200 has a still perfectly GREAT 24Mpixels CMOS (sony) sensor, with very serviceable noise at high iso

nothing to "upgrade" there, unless all you do is look at mft charts
