Thats an interesting point; as certain characters from lines/sublines that went outside the classic G1/Diaclone design norms get new versions and homages, they keep the spirit of their original lines alive.
Other characters like that:
Shockwave/Whirl-non takara toylines, had a mono eye when Takara opted for more traditional mecha heads on their toys
Omega Supreme-partsformer, weird dome head and asymmetry
Bludgeon/Thundering-keep the weird Decepticon Pretender look alive, so much so their pretender looks overshadow their core robots
Waspinator- season 1 Beast Wars and mutant heads
Tankor-Vehicon designs(heads in both modes, very robotic robot modes lacking regular hands, feet, etc.)
Bulkhead-animated aesthetics, namely giving him a big lower jaw and a wider figure
