That's the lamest way to play that kind of game. Leaderships are given out like crazy in this game, so is catfood, wasting some recharges on a stage that has a really good yield to it, rather than putting it aside and grinding gives you much better yield for the place you are currently in, thus making you advance faster in the long run. Not only that it's actually fun.
It doesn't take too much to get a feel for a good team, and you have both older cheap stages to train on and the cat dojo to test out a team on for free.
Read some descriptions, try to see which units work together, get some tanks, some specialists, some close and long range complimentaries...
Also forgot to say this in the original post, but waiting at the start or grinding for cents is never needed
stages that don't want you to grind make you send units from the start, stages where you need a lot of money toss miniboses like horn an moth to rack up money quickly.
If you need to spam to get through those stuff you are playing it really wrong.
