Except that's not accurate. It definitely makes male children preferable but they have *always* been preferable based on how Chinese society works. Even without a child limit parents would still seek having a male child to pass on their family name and get a job. It's not a form of sexism if that's what you believe, it's just that, bearing the circumstances, having a male child is more beneficial and thus people take the more profitable option by their OWN choice. Apples and oranges.
I never said it didn't have bad side effects, either. Of course the poor gender distribution will have a big impact later, there won't be enough woman to bear all those men's children. But you know what? It helps control the overpopulation issue further down the line.
