Not bad, just underdeveloped.
The bottom line is: SM had potential but failed to achieve it. Much of it may be due to the game having to stick to the 20th anniversary schedule. That probably changed a lot of plans for how Gen VI and VII played out an resulted in the game feeling rushed.
Also, the Zygarde cells thing was worse than all the things you mentioned simply because of just how unintuitive it was.
