That's not entirely accurate. He does have that role to a degree but in a franchise like Pokemon most of the designs were probably chosen by a committee that picks what's most marketable in their eyes, or based on current trends. He most likely would have been on that committee this time around but it's not just him. One person does not dictate direction or decisions ever. For the most part an art director oversees and guides the team during the design phase of the game, doing production art, and capturing a feel for the region. Usually in conjunction with the map designer, or whoever. It's a team effort here.
Same with Pokemon designs. They have hundreds of designs from across the design team and while Turner is involved not every design is one of his, nor was choosing who got chosen his decision alone. Ohmori, Masuda, other artists on the team, the battle team. They all had their say.
Blaming Turner for every last thing is as retarded as blaming Sugimori for Magmorter when Hironobu Yoshida was it's designer. No one does that for any other art director but since James Turner is a name they recognize they sperg out about shit they don't fucking understand. Some people think he was the one that selected which old Pokemon were cut. That's unbelievably and unfathomably retarded.
And I'm not shilling here. I don't give two fucks if you don't like his actual designs or if you have a problem with SS overall but I am so goddamn sick of seeing people attribute shit like Garbador to him, or Klefki, or Klang to him or actively misunderstand what role he had in the production of the game. If you're going to insult or complain about something at least know what you're talking about.
