Weeeeeeeell... sort of. A lot of people search for "larp armor" instead of, say, "reenactment armor" when they buy their kit, which leads them to stuff crafted specifically for larping, which is often poor quality and either heavy/cumbersome or "studded leather" nonsense. And it's crafted that way because this myth used to be widespread, so the people making it thought that was how it was supposed to be. And the cycle continues.
There's a greater number of them nowadays who are starting to realize that armor encumbrance is vastly misunderstood, but it's still something of a minority, at least in the US larp scene.
