I'm there right now and can tell you yes and no. First, food here is generally pretty cheap, sure theres plenty of expensive stuff but generally you can buy full meals at propr restaurants for under 10 USD. Travel here can vary price wise pretty greatly based off what you want. The country is not as small as it seems, If you think you can realistically go from Tokyo to Osaka for a day trip you are wrong unless you just want a super stressful day trip. Traveling any decent distance leaves you with 3 options: Bullet train, night bus, and by plane. Bullet trains are honestly the priciest option followed by plane and then night bus. Each has its positives but flight is the worst unless you really enjoy it because ya know, airports suck. Also if you think you're gonna come and get some great deal on some shiny new tech turn right around. Prices of tech here are mostly noticeably higher than in America. If you just wanna come and walk around and look at shit then its dirt cheap, most temples grounds and the like are public access but the temple itself will charge you if you wanna go inside (this only applies to "touristy" ones no idea about small temples.) Lodging wise, AirBnB absolutely the best way to do it and they will largely be very clean and well maintained. Either way its a nice country to visit and I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself.
