Dunno exactly how was that supposed to work, but they were given an envelope with coordinates and based on that envelope (that wasn't opened until after the thing) he was supposed to say what he is seeing.
So basically he didn't know it was anything extraterrestrial, but he could probably suspect that they are going to go extra wacky on the timeline just to test his bullshit, which kinda backfired.
