But this wasn't a charging bear that needed to be dropped instantly and if you shoot a grizzly a few times with a 9mm, then it will die eventually. if the bear was coming around at night, then he might not have gotten a good shot. He may have just been seeing the bear in the dark at 40 yards and popped a couple rounds hoping to scare it. Or he shot once, missed, and then kept dumping at empty air even after the bear ran away.
He should have had a rifle though given how open everything is out there. If you have wide open views for hundreds of yards around, get a rifle.
