When discussing gear there are two different aspects:>capabilities>technical quality
The former is far more important than the latter.
A Yongnuo 50 mm f/1.8 (cheapest autofocus 50 mm I have ever used) is great for portraits because on a cropsensor it's:>short telephoto>wide aperture
But from a technical perspective it's pretty bad:>lens shakes in its barrel>has noticeable chromatic abberations>not the sharpest lens
I still recommend it for everyone that gets into photography.
For a cropsensor you want:>kit lens with image stabilisation>YN35/2 normal lens>YN50/1.8 portrait lens>tripod>external flash>ND8 filter>polarizing filter
Beyond that, you usualy need an actual reason to buy more gear.
