Still, it's the plot of that story that Thompson has her in frontline service where she always gets heavily damaged, before 1911 notices after the first time on the range with m14 that m14 (which is almost completely the same gun as m21) would be better served, what a fucking shock, in a similar role to m21 and seems to be less suitable for frontline use. The way I see it, just from what's in the story, this means that:
-Thompson failed to correctly evaluate her assets, probably through neglect (the way 1911 quickly picks up on it suggests she never even looked at m14s combat / training data)
-This results in Thompson recklessly endangering m14 and by extension the rest of the squad
-Thompson fails to notice and correct her mismanagement and blames m14 for failing at a task she isn't made for.
-Instead of adjusting the tactics and squad organisation to improve performance, she reprimands and grounds m14, and it takes (honesty a quite basic analysis and suggestion by) 1911 to make that basic adjustment because Thompson apparently can't be arsed to do her job.
-once the adjustment in tactics is made, m14 instantly performs much better, Thompson still refuses to take responsibility for her misjudgement
- Thompson(or her Intel) then misjudged the mission resulting in a really bad engagement against a superior foe resulting in a rout of the whole squad. (not at mod3 yet so I don't know how it's gonna continue)
The way I see it, the biggest liability in that squad is Thompsons ability to make judgement calls and manage her squad. If she'd been in 'nam she'd probably get fragged for being a bad officer before too long.
Oh, and in mp5s mod story it is certainly implied that smgs (or at least mp5) understand that their job is to draw fire for her squad.
