it was good, one of my favs really - no bullshit base building, build queues or whatever, just pure space combat with the fleet you've picked + pre-battle adjustment of chosen upgrades and skills
it started off ambitious - all factions from the lore (spare for the really obscure ones with no tabletop presence like the Rak'gol), promises of better balance and different builds you could try, the devs would post regular updates and explain their vision and the data they collect along with their observations and ideas for changes
they've manged to achieve semi-decent balance but the game still wasn't perfect, I believe the Orks still had 60% WR during their last major balance update with WR breakdowns and shit, devs said they want to still work on improvements but at a certain moment they just fucking stopped. Just like that, no word, no anything
I think there was some necron content patch with 2 additional ships and later on a chaos DLC but the overall multiplayer focus just stopped as if they decided it's not worth it
so the multiplayer started dying
I've spent nearly 400hrs in the game, got to the top on ranked, but it stopped being fun when the queues started to drag on for way too long, when I'd get matched with weaker opponents or just same people over and over again
so the population slowly dwindled to the current status, nowadays you might find some madmen that still try to play it and get a match with them but best you'll get is 2-3 same opponents
If you wanted to play the multiplayer then that train is already gone.
The game is easy to understand, you don't need to be an autist
If you want to play singleplayer then try it, I suggest picking normal/easy mode tho as hard just spams you with more fleets and honestly it gets boring when your sector gets attacked for 20th time during the campaign.
single-player wise the first game was better as the campaign was more streamlined instead of the total war-ish style that I think does not serve the game that well
