They really aren't, though. Literally the entire structure of the films is designed to telegraph exactly when a scare is supposed to happen every single time.>camera fast-forwards through most of the night>suddenly changes to real time>THIS IS THE PART WHERE THE SCARY THING HAPPENS, GET READY TO BE SCARED
They really don't function very well for what they're trying to be. The first, for the scale and budget behind it, is completely forgivable and I can understand the appeal for some people. Anything past that is genuinely not good.
